What a SIM Card Actually Does

An eSIM is a chip permanently embedded in your device that can be programmed with carrier credentials remotely. eSIM vs. Physical SIM: The Practical Differences
For most everyday use, eSIM and physical SIM behave identically. Calls, texts, and data work the same way. The differences show up in specific situations.

For manufacturers, removing the physical SIM tray also frees up internal space and allows for better water resistance sealing. The iPhone 15 and 16 lines sold in the United States ship with no physical SIM tray at all — eSIM only. This forced a hardware transition that's now irreversible for Apple's US product line.
How Carrier Switching Works With eSIM
The carrier switching process with eSIM is faster than the physical SIM process but involves the same underlying steps. You're still porting your number, still dealing with account numbers and PINs, still waiting for the transfer to complete. What changes is the physical logistics.
The typical eSIM activation flow works like this: you sign up with a new carrier online or in-app, they provide a QR code or activation code, you scan it or enter it in your phone's settings, the carrier profile downloads, and after number porting completes your service switches over. On dual SIM devices, both numbers receive calls and texts simultaneously. You set a default for outgoing calls and data, and choose which number to use for each outgoing call if needed. The two lines operate independently — each has its own billing, its own voicemail, and its own carrier. On iPhone, this feature is called Dual SIM. Android devices implement it similarly through the phone's SIM management settings.
On devices that support both, consider keeping your primary carrier on eSIM and using the physical SIM slot for a data-only SIM when traveling or as a backup carrier. This gives you the speed of eSIM switching for your main line while retaining flexibility. International travel is where eSIM delivers its most obvious practical advantage. Previously, traveling internationally meant either paying your home carrier's international roaming rates — often substantial — or buying a local SIM card on arrival, which required finding a carrier store, presenting identification, and physically swapping cards while hoping your unlocked phone supported the right frequency bands.
With eSIM, you can purchase a local carrier profile before your flight departs. Services like Airalo, Holafly, and similar eSIM marketplaces sell regional data profiles from local carriers worldwide. You download the profile while still at home on Wi-Fi, it activates when you land, and you have local data rates from the moment you step off the plane. Your home number stays active on a separate profile for incoming calls.
The practical limitation is data versus voice and SMS. Most travel eSIM services provide data only — calls and texts still route through your home carrier profile unless you specifically set the travel profile as your default for all services. For most travelers, data-only works fine since calls and messages happen over internet-based apps anyway.
Which Phones and Carriers Support It
eSIM support has become nearly universal on flagship smartphones released since 2020. Apple has included eSIM in iPhones since the XS (2018), and US models have been eSIM-only since the iPhone 14. Google Pixel phones have supported eSIM since the Pixel 2. Samsung's Galaxy line has supported eSIM since the S20. Most flagship Android devices from any major manufacturer now include it.

What eSIM Doesn't Solve

Switching carriers is faster with eSIM, but the decision of which carrier to switch to requires the same research regardless.
eSIM also does not eliminate SIM-swapping fraud. SIM-swapping is a social engineering attack where a bad actor convinces your carrier's customer service to transfer your number to a device they control. This attack works at the carrier account level, not the hardware level. A carrier that can be talked into transferring a physical SIM can equally be talked into transferring an eSIM profile. The technical mechanism changes but the vulnerability remains.
